Zoophyte

WA Tour Diary (Day 7-8)

Zoophyte at ClancyWaking up in the middle of nowhere…well somewhere in Joondalup… feeling dazed and confused, myself and Maj managed to locate the van and began our search for Cam and Judd. After dozens of phone calls and poor directions we found them looking rather worse for wear, especially Juddboy who had stumbled ‘up’ a few stairs the night before, that’s right ‘up’ the stairs not down… Judd was one grumpy foul mouthed tobacco breathing man, who ended up crashin’ out pretty quickly. We headed straight to Cottesloe for another dip and a wee look around.

After the beach we drove to Freo for soundcheck at Clancy’s Fish Pub. Managed to catch a few z’s on the couch while the guys were setting up and taking a very long time to get organised. Got a bite to eat a Clancy’s and tucked into some great seafood, before hitting the stage.

Gilps and Cam with Rick and Jake Steele

The gig had an awesome vibe for a smaller crowd. It was a nice intimate room and everybody was feeling it. The night was kicked off by the amazing tunes of local legend Rick Steele who had agreed to come down and play after bumping into him at the Perth Blues Club two nights earlier. Had a good chat with Rick after the gig. It was a pleasure catching up with you mate and I can’t wait to here your album which will be out in February 2008. Rick has some great stories to tell and is a true gentleman. We headed out after playing two sets but couldn’t really find anywhere to go… so off we went back to Fish’s pad.

Cam at Margaret RiverUp bright and early the next day, packed the Van and began the trek to Margaret River. Margaret River is south of Perth about 3 hours drive, so it was another day in the van with DJ Majernik! We arrived in Margaret River late afternoon and headed straight for the beach to check out the magical coast line. After a quick look around we headed to the The Settler’s Tavern in Margaret River and unloaded our gear. Had a quick bite to eat… more calamari and seafood then off we went down the road to a house the Settler’s crew had organised for us.

Judd, Maj and Chris in the VanWe were overwhelmed when we discovered our accommodation was so good. Cathy, who works at the Settler’s puts all the travelling bands up in her house that is divided into two. Cathy is one of the coolest people we have met on our tour so far and had heaps of amazing stories from all the bands she has had stay over the past 4 years. She was so welcoming and made us feel at home in her 5 star pad. Thankyou so much Cathy for your generosity and kindness. Can’t wait to visit again soon.

We played at The Settler’s Tavern to a great crowd and it was cool to catch up with Jo again who we’d met in Adelaide 4 months earlier. We partied on through the night and I think we ended up at The Backpackers. Big night, and I can’t recall much after the gig… I do remember however finding Juddy and Maj asleep in the van with a couple bottles of red listening to Lionel Richie… pretty weird!!!

Gilps xo
